The orphanage is being built first and once it is up and running, work for building a school alongside it will begin. Reviews
I started off my volunteering experience in Ghana at one of the schools in Denu (Volta Region). As much as I enjoyed it and loved the children, I felt as though my time was not spent as usefully by the director as could be. My boyfriend had been working at this Construction Site since the start, so I had heard a lot about the work that was being done. So, I transferred and worked there for the remaining 2 weeks of my stay. The work involved a variety of things: mixing the materials to make concrete, digging holes for foundation-purposes, making and laying bricks, being at the disposal of the other workers and... mainly just having a really good time! We only worked until midday to avoid the sun at its hottest and we were told to take regular and long breaks through out, therefore making sure we never felt over-worked. Despite this, there was never a dull moment around and we established a real bond with the fellow workers. I may have only worked at the Construction Site briefly, but I felt a strong attachment with the project since the start. It is a real beauty to become part of something that is bigger than yourself and I cannot wait to see the end result! Knowing that thanks to this project, 80 orphans will be given not only a loving safe home, but also a really good education is a life-changing experience. And it doesn't stop there: within each of the 10 newly constructed room there will be 8 orphans living with (a) foster-parent(s) providing the children with the appropriate and individual love and care they need. The outbuildings will equally provide the children with all the needed facilities and there is a plan to create an adoption office on the spot, which improves the children's chances of a better life. I was very sad to leave Ghana and the project behind me, but I will continue to show my support and hopefully I will return in the very near future!
